NEW DELHI: A Polish woman in her early thirties was abducted and sexually assaulted, possibly in a car, when she was travelling to the city from Mathura on the night of January 2, police said.

The woman, who was with her two-and-a-half-year old daughter, claims she was threatened with a knife and sedated before being raped. She has not specified if more than one person was involved. All she says is that a man had pulled her inside a car.

On Friday morning, she regained consciousness near the Nizamuddin railway station. That evening she approached Paharganj police, who got her examined medically and registered an FIR under sections of abduction, wrongful restraint, causing hurt, poisoning and rape.

A police team has been sent with the survivor to identify the place of occurrence. The woman said she could not note down the number of the car she and her child were dragged into. It's unclear if she was assaulted in a car or taken elsewhere and sexually assaulted as she said she had lost consciousness.

The survivor is from Warsaw but has been living in Mathura for three years where she joined a religious congregation, sources said. She also exports garments.

The survivor's horror run began around 10pm on Thursday when she and her daughter were waiting on the roadside for a taxi to reach Delhi, when a "big, white car" stopped near her and the driver asked where she was headed. As soon as she said Delhi, he pulled her and her daughter inside.

When she resisted and screamed, the driver took out a long knife and threatened to stab her and her daughter, she claimed. On Yamuna Express Way, he allegedly sprayed a sedative on both which made them lose consciousness.

Next morning, she found herself near Nizamuddin railway station and sought help from passersby. People reportedly directed her to Paharganj, an area frequented by foreigners, many among them from her country.

The woman checked into a guesthouse in the area and reached Paharganj police station in the evening and narrated her ordeal. A case was immediately registered.

When Delhi Police contacted their counterparts in Mathura, they said they had no information on any such incident. A police team then left for Mathura with a zero FIR.

Police are trying to identify the taxi driver using local intelligence and scanning CCTV cameras at the toll booths to look for a white big car, which is their only lead.
